New theatre simulation room opens

The Jogoo Road campus's perioperative simulation theatre now runs twelve individual stations for sterile-technique practice — a significant expansion of the space where Diploma in Perioperative Theatre Technology students drill scrubbing, gowning and instrument-handling routines before they ever set foot in a real operating theatre.

The room is built as a full mock operating theatre rather than a generic classroom: scrub stations, instrument trays laid out to hospital standard, and enough space for supervised sterile-drill practice in small groups. Twelve stations means more students can work through the routine simultaneously under direct supervision, rather than queuing for a shared setup — which matters, because sterile technique is a skill that only becomes reliable through repetition.

This sits alongside the rest of the Block B teaching space at Jogoo Road, including the science and biology laboratory one floor down, so theatre technology students move between simulated practice and foundational lab science without leaving the building.

For prospective students, the practical takeaway is straightforward: by the time our theatre technology graduates begin clinical attachment at a partner hospital, sterile technique is already muscle memory rather than a new skill they're learning under pressure — which is exactly the confidence the simulation room is designed to build.
