Mental health nursing in Kenya
A growing field, and how to get into it from a certificate.
Mental health care in Kenya is short-staffed relative to need, and that shortage is well documented at national policy level — the Ministry of Health's own mental health strategy has flagged the gap in trained personnel for years. For anyone drawn to this kind of work, the practical question isn't whether the field is growing (it is), but how to get a foot in the door without a four-year nursing degree.
Jobplus doesn't run a mental-health-nursing diploma by that name, so it's worth being precise about the honest entry route rather than overstating it: our Community Health & HIV Management and Community Development & Public Health diplomas are the closest direct pathways, since both build community-level counselling, public health promotion and referral skills that carry over directly into mental health work, even though the curriculum isn't mental-health-specific. Our Care Giving certificate is a shorter route into hands-on, supervised home and facility care for anyone who wants direct experience before committing to a longer programme.
From either starting point, the realistic next step for someone who wants to specialise further in psychiatric or mental health nursing specifically is a bridging or upgrading route into a KMTC or university nursing programme — something our admissions desk can talk through case by case, since it depends on your KCSE grade and which diploma you've completed.
